2.13: I Believe In Anything That Brings You Back Home To Me.written for the Fanforum Chuck & Blair 2000th Thread Celebration • watch
The song that began and echoed throughout the episode crescendoed in this moment. Blair walks into her bedroom, walls up, and demands, “What do you think you’re doing here?” A destroyed Chuck simply looks up, then looks away and back down. Blair hugs him. He clutches onto her for dear life as she soothes him with caresses, and for the first time we see Chuck cry.
You know you have a golden couple—both characters and actors—on your hands when they can pull off a scene that requires no words to move you with their emotions. That’s reason number one it’s my favorite. Blair takes one look at Chuck’s face and she understands that right here, there will be no games, no lies, no lashing out, no pushing each other away. Chuck may not have said “I love you” back but he let her in by going to her. It’s the most intimate they’ve been since they agreed they couldn’t be together until “the future” and it’s my favorite type of interaction for them—the one behind closed doors, when it’s just them and everything falls away and they become their truest selves, feel their deepest feelings in the presence of each other, and love each other the hardest.
While it’s not a neat fit with CB’s story, but more with Chuck and his father’s funeral, Signs became one of my favorite songs because of this scene (it’s my ringtone), and it has to be one of the top musical moments on the show: I just love how the acoustic version blended into the recorded one as Blair moved from wedding sparkles and champagne to dark and silent bedroom, party of one. How the violins and percussion swelled during the scene. And how it all ended in the glockenspiel playing like a little music box left open while Chuck and Blair hold each other in the dark. Everything just felt broken in that moment, yet at the same time, she who wears a champagne-colored dress for the wedding, engulfs he who wears a disheveled black suit for the funeral, like a candle engulfs the darkness—in clarity and warmth. She may be small, but her light and embrace is strong.
Blair and Chuck—always with the walls and smokescreens, always acting like they’re more adult than anyone else—turn into the sad, broken kids that they are, in need of a real family more than anything else. Chuck leaves the Van der Woodsen-Bass home to go to Blair. Blair leaves the Waldorf-Rose extended family downstairs to go to Chuck. They found their real family in each other. They’ve come home.
“I believe in anything that brings you back home to me.”
I’ll always believe that Chuck and Blair will come back home to each other.
